      Bosnia & Herzegovina: ANUBiH, Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina

      The Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ANUBiH) is an ICSU member since 2010.

      The Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ANUBiH), the most senior scientific and artistic institution in the country, was founded by the Law of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1966; until that time there had existed the Scientific Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina, founded in 1951.

      The governing bodies of ANUBiH are the Assembly, the Presidency and the Executive Committee.

      ANUBiH is composed of six departments: Social Sciences, Humanities, Medical Science, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Technical Sciences and Arts. The departments are authorized to form centres (those currently in existence are: Centre for Balkan Studies, Centre for Lexicography and Lexicology, Philosophical Research Centre, Centre for the Coordination of Medical Research, Centre for Karst, and Systems Research Centre), committees and commissions.

      Within the scope of its activities, the Academy develops scientific thought and fosters the arts; organizes and coordinates research in all fields of science and encourages creativity in the field of the arts; contributes to the formation and implementation of sciences and arts development policy; submits proposals and opinions to State bodies on the upgrade of the sciences and arts; and publishes the results of scientific research and scientific and artistic works of particular importance for the State and its cultural heritage.

      The number of the Academy’s active members (full and corresponding), who are chosen among the most eminent persons actively engaged in different fields of science and art, is limited to 55. In addition, the Academy has members (domestic and foreign) and honorary members.

      The Academy publishes three journals: Acta Medica Academica, Dialogue and the Sarajevo Journal of Mathematics, as well as the Almanac, annals, and other occasional publications.

      ANUBiH has signed agreements on international scientific cooperation with six foreign academies and seven international institutions.
