International symposium on science assessment and research integrity

Through its Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in the conduct of Science (CFRS), the International Council for Science is engaged in the promotion of a responsible conduct of science. In that context, it has been co-sponsoring the three World Conferences on Research Integrity (WCRI) that have taken place since 2007. The Singapore Statement on Research Integrity that resulted from the WCRI in 2010 has become a universally recognised document, laying down fundamental principles.

This year’s World Conference on Research Integrity in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 31 May to 3 June, will be considering the systemic conditions that favour or impede research integrity. Important elements in this context are assessments and rankings of different kinds. These include performance assessments for researchers, university rankings, journal impact factors and many more. Concerned that these increasingly used management tools potentially distort research quality and integrity, a symposium organised by CFRS will focus on metrics and their impact on research integrity. Building on a workshop CFRS co-organised in Beijing, China, in April 2014, presentations will provide perspectives from international science and policy organisations.
