The Scientific Committee:
- Is responsible for the scientific planning , coordination, guidance and oversight of the Programme;
- Will ensure that global and regional programme activities are integrated under a single coherent framework;
- Will engage with relevant intergovernmental and non-governmental partners to promote the programme and shape its directions;
- Will facilitate the involvement of interested ICSU Union and National Members and other Interdisciplinary Bodies, in the implementation of the programme;
- Will monitor the development of the programme over time – identifying gaps and priorities as necessary;
- Will play an advocacy role with relevant research funders and donors, both public and private.
In performing these functions the Scientific Committee (SC) will be supported by an International Programme Office or equivalent support mechanism.
Committee Membership
The SC-Urban Health consists of a chair and 13 additional members appointed by ICSU. The committee will be made up of leading scientific experts from a range of disciplines covering natural, social, behavioural and health sciences as well as areas such as systems analysis, urban planning and engineering. Attention will be paid to geographic and gender balance. Members are appointed for a period of three years, renewable once. In addition to the independent members, who serve in a personal capacity, ICSU and any other eventual co-sponsors will each have an ex officio member.
Finance
During the initial 3 year period, ICSU will provide financial support for the committee. In the longer-term, and once the International Programme Office is in place, additional sources of funding will be identified.
