The Royal Society is an independent scientific academy founded in 1660 and self-governing under Royal Charter. The Society has three roles, as a scientific academy of the United Kingdom, as a learned society, and as a funding agency. It responds to individual demand with selection by merit, not by field.
The Society’s 1400 Fellows (designated FRS and elected from the best scientists from the UK and Commonwealth) and Foreign Members (elected from the best scientists from other countries) give the Society its authority and reputation for excellence. The Society is governed by a Council headed by the President, Lord Rees of Ludlow, and four officers. The permanent staff is headed by the Executive Secretary, Stephen Cox CVO.
The Society’s objectives are to:
- Invest in future scientific leaders and in innovation
- Influence policymaking with the best scientific advice
- Invigorate science and mathematics education
- Increase access to the best science internationally
- Inspire an interest in the joy, wonder and excitement of scientific discovery
The Society’s relations with the ICSU family are guided by its Scientific Unions Committee, chaired by Professor Judith Howard CBE FRS.
