The International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics was founded in 1999 as the successor of CICIAM, the 'Committee for the International Conferences on Industrial and Applied Mathematics'.

CICIAM had started a quadrennial congress series, with the first one being held in Paris 1987. The purpose is to promote industrial and applied mathematics internationally; to promote interactions between the member societies and support the goals of these societies; and to coordinate planning for periodic international meetings on industrial and applied mathematics. ICIAM awards several international prizes in applied mathematics, which are given out at these Congresses.
