The International Federation of Societies for Microscopy was created by ICSU in 1951 as a Joint Commission for Electron Microscopy. It became an independent federation, with the purpose of furthering international cooperation between microscopists, in 1955. The federation has three Regional Committees, 37 national Member Societies, and 9 national Associate Member Societies.
