The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research acts as the national umbrella for scientific activities in Iraq. It comprises 13 universities, a committee of technical institutes, a supreme committee of medical specializations and 8 private (self-funding) colleges through which it provides for all fields of science. It maintains good relations with most of the countries in the world by concluding bilateral agreements and executive programmes of cooperation in the scientific, cultural and educational fields. It is a member of several international organizations.
