The Colombian Academy of Sciences was founded 1929. In 1933, the Academy was recognized as a consultative body of the Colombian government. Since then, it has operated without interruption. In 1936, it began editing its Revista. The Academy also publishes four book collections: scientific books, science textbooks, history of science books and memoirs. Each year, it delivers two prizes: The Colombian Academy of Sciences Prize and The Colombian Academy of Sciences - The Third World Academy of Sciences Prize. The Academy is a non-governmental organization with three categories of members: corresponding, 80 full (40 members) and honorary (6 members). It promotes scientific research, particularly, those programmes that are oriented to enhance knowledge of the Colombian natural environment and its resources. Science teaching improvement, at all levels of the Colombian educational system, is another of its main tasks. These activities are considered of the highest priority for scientific capacity building in the country.
