The Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, founded in 1967 by the State Assembly, is an independent scientific and artistic institution of the highest rank in the Republic of Macedonia. Its aim is to promote the advancement of all branches of sciences and arts and to foster the introduction of the latest scientific achievements in Macedonia. The Academy encourages, coordinates, organizes and conducts research and artistic activities (projects), especially when they are of particular interest to the country.
The Academy comprises 5 departments (Linguistic and Literary Sciences; Social Sciences; Arts; Mathematical and Technical Sciences; and Biological and Medical Sciences) and 5 internal research units (Research Centre for Energy, Informatics and Materials; Research Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology; Centre for Strategic Research; Lexicographic Centre; and Centre for Areal Linguistics).
Its present membership includes 43 full members, 28 foreign members and 1 honorary member. The election of new members is held every third year. Membership and rights are for life.
The activities of the Academy are administered by the Executive Board and by the Presidency. The highest organ of governance is the Assembly, consisting of all full members of the Academy.
The Academy publishes scientific series, monogaphs, proceedings of symposia and reports of its research and artistic activities (projects).
