The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) is "the" global network for forest science cooperation. It is open to all individuals and organizations dedicated to forest and forest products research and related disciplines. It is a non-profit, non-governmental and non-discriminatory organization with a tradition dating back to 1892.

The mission of IUFRO is to promote the coordination of and the international cooperation in scientific studies embracing the whole field of research related to forests and trees for the well-being of forests and the people that depend on them.

The scientific activities of IUFRO are spread over a number of Divisions and Task Forces. Divisions are subdivided into Research Groups and Working Parties and support researchers in collaborative work. Task Forces are established for a limited period of time to deal with and synthesize scientific information about topical cross-cutting issues that go beyond the scope of any one Division or Research Group.

Special Programmes and Projects of IUFRO are currently the Special Programme for Developing Countries (SPDC); the Terminology Project SilvaVoc; and the Special Project on World Forests, Society and Environment (WFSE). IUFRO also leads the CFP initiative Global Forest Information Service (GFIS).
