The Centre Scientifique de Monaco covers oceanography, marine biology and protection and regeneration of the marine environment. At the Centre’s Observatoire Océanologique Européen scientists from different nations participate in research work on the prevention of major ecological hazards and the biological regeneration of damaged areas. There are three main areas of research: 1) bioindicators (development of biological detecting tools to identify the signs preceding major ecological perturbations), 2) biological modelling tools (development of theoretical and experimental models in order to better understand the mechanisms involved in the triggering and evolution of these perturbations, to predict their evolution and to be able to measure the risks), and 3) restoration of damaged sites (development of breeding techniques so as to restock spoilt areas, diminish the pressure on over exploited stocks of natural species and save species threatened with extinction).
The Centre Scientifique has a library which is housed in the Musée Océanographique de Monaco, which also houses research laboratories and experimental aquariums. The Bulletin du Centre Scientifique de Monaco is published annually in French and English.
