The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences was founded in 1739 to promote the sciences, primarily mathematics and natural sciences. This is a goal which has remained unchanged until the present. The Academy programme today is based on its scientific classes/sections and committees, with main programme elements, such as international cooperation and scientific exchange programmes, science publishing, dissemination of scientific information to the general public, and provision of scientific advice to government and parliament. In addition, the Academy manages a project to stimulate the interest for science and technology in schools. The Academy runs seven research institutes, it grants scholarships and awards prizes, of which the Nobel prizes in Physics and Chemistry, the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences and the Crafoord prizes are internationally the most well-renowned.
