Founded in 1972, for more than 26 years, IIASA’s enduring objectives have been to initiate and support collaborative and individual research in relation to problems of modern societies arising from scientific and technological development.

After nearly three decades, IIASA continues as a reputed centre for innovative research, international interdisciplinary collaboration, conferences and workshops, and networking with other influential organizations of scientists worldwide. Because of its neutral, independent and non-governmental status, IIASA provides non-political and unbiased perspectives that are particularly valued by those utilizing the institute’s research findings.

Indeed, IIASA research results have contributed to major policy developments in the European Union (EU) and at international and regional levels.

IIASA, located in the small town of Laxenburg (16 kilometers south of Austria’s capital city, Vienna), is supported by a group of National Member Organizations (NMOs) in nations from Asia, Europe and North America and by numerous organizations and agencies. The NMOs nominate representatives to IIASA’s governing council that oversees Institute developments.
