11th CFRS Meeting (Sep 2011)
In following the scope of the Committee’s engagement, its members reviewed developments related to 6 past and considered action on 8 new cases involving individual scientists, whose rights were infringed upon. CFRS also examined the situation of 2 academies, whose scientific independence and freedom were under threat by governmental interference.
The Committee also adopted the final versions of three Advisory Notes dealing with issues related to the freedom and responsibility of individual scientists and the scientific community generally. These concern sharing of scientific data with developing countries, access to genetic resources and the sharing of benefits arising from their utilisation, and bias in science publishing.
Discussed were also future workshops and conferences that would be co-organised by CFRS, in particular the one on “Private Sector – Academia Interaction” together with the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences at the end of November.
In conjunction with the ICSU General Assembly, the Committee furthermore concluded its work plan for 2012-2014 that was to be presented to the ICSU Membership for approval.
A final issue concerned the introduction of a “Freedom and Responsibility Portal” on the ICSU website, providing documentation on different aspects of freedom and responsibility in the conduct of science.
