The International Council for Science (ICSU) is seeking a part-time (50-60%) Information Technology Officer for a permanent (CDI) position, starting in March 2012 or soon thereafter.

Salary: Euros 40,000–50,000€ pro rata (net per year after social charges and before income tax)

Location: Paris, France

The International Council for Science (ICSU) is seeking a part-time (50-60%) Information Technology Officer for a permanent (CDI) position, starting in March 2012 or soon thereafter.

ICSU is a non-governmental organization whose mission is to strengthen international science for the benefit of society. ICSU is well established in developing and coordinating international research programmes and communicating science for policy. The head office is based in Paris and there are three smaller regional offices in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Being a global organisation with a distributed secretariat, ICSU relies heavily on the use of information and communication technologies.

This job offers a unique opportunity to further develop and manage the in-house information technology capacity. The Information Technology Officer will be responsible for developing, monitoring and maintaining the computer systems and networks of the ICSU Secretariat, including communication facilities such as video-conferencing systems and mobile technologies. He/She will be responsible for installing and configuring computer systems, diagnosing hardware and software faults and solving technical and applications problems, providing support and procedural documentation and setting up new user accounts and profiles. She/he will be expected to test, evaluate and deploy new software and technologies. The Information Technology Officer will also be responsible for maintaining the Secretariat’s web services and applications, including its contacts database.

The ICSU Secretariat is a small international team of ~30 people and the ability to work in close cooperation with others is important.

Duties:

  • Administrate a Microsoft server environment
  • Provide user support
  • Maintain and develop the technical side of ICSU websites
  • Liaise with external service providers (Information Technologies and web)
  • Install and configure new hardware
  • Related administrative work including budgeting

Candidates will need to show evidence of the following:

  • Ability to think logically
  • Ability to offer help desk support: excellent listening and questioning skills combined with the ability to interact confidently with users to establish what the problem is and explain the solution
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Ability to prioritise workload and respond well in crisis situations
  • Patience and attention to detail

Essential qualifications are:

  • First degree in computing and/or Information Technology (or in science with relevant IT training and experience)
  • Experience in Microsoft windows 2003/8 server administration
  • Experience in administration of Microsoft Exchange 2007, Backup Exec and antivirus software
  • Familiarity with Web Content Management Systems, such as Plone
  • Knowledge of programming languages, such as JavaScript and Python
  • Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, support, and implement technical solutions for laptops and smart-phones
  • A science background and/or a broad interest in science would also be an advantage

The working language of ICSU is English and a good knowledge of French is also essential for this position, which will involve interaction with external providers.  The final salary will be dependent on the experience and qualifications of the candidate, as well as the arrangement for part-time working hours.
