The Forum brings together leading international scientists, policy-makers and other stakeholders to explore the key role of interdisciplinary science and innovation in the transition to sustainable development, a green economy and poverty eradication. The aim is to help establish the research, technology and policy agendas that will be needed after Rio+20. The Forum is organised by ICSU, in partnership with UNESCO, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), the International Social Science Council (ISSC), the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. |

Future Earth will be officially launched on June 14th at the Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development co-organised by ICSU. An outstanding panel of high-level representatives from the scientific, policy, research funding, and business communities will outline and discuss the Vision for Future Earth, the role of this new initiative in providing robust scientific evidence on global environmental change, and supporting policy and action towards global sustainability. The speakers will unveil the next steps for involving researchers and stakeholders in the design and implementation of the initiative. |

ICSU President Yuan Tseh Lee opens International Polar Year ConferenceMay 03, 2012ICSU President Yuan Tseh Lee was present at the opening ceremony of International Polar Year conference in Montreal on 23 April , 2012. In his speech, he celebrated IPY as a triumph of global science, in that coordination was first led by ICSU and the WMO, and subsequently the global science community took hold and assumed ownership of IPY.
Highlights of the State of the Planet DeclarationApr 17, 2012The International Council for Science was a sponsor of Planet Under Pressure, a four-day conference in London which brought together more than 3,000 experts to assess the state of the planet and explore solutions to impending social and environmental crises. At the close of the conference, a final declaration was issued, with a view to informing the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in June, 2012.
How to Describe Nanomaterials – an ICSU workshop in ParisApr 17, 2012In response to requests from several groups involved in preparing standards for nanotechnology, the International Council for Science and CODATA, the ICSU Committee on Data For Science and Technology, organized a workshop on 23-24 February 2012 to consider standards for describing materials on the nanoscale. A total of 51 international experts attended, including representatives of ten international unions, ISO Technical Committee 229 on Nanotechnology, industry, government and academia, national standards development organizations and the OECD.
Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) to meet in PanamaApr 13, 2012The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is a new international platform for scientists and policy makers. It is to some extent modelled on the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) and will have a similar integrated science assessment function. ICSU and its programmes for biodiversity (DIVERSITAS) and the human dimensions of environmental change (IHDP) have been strong advocates for IPBES.
ICSU Foresight Analysis peer-reviewedApr 11, 2012A paper has been published in Science and Public Policy describing ICSU's latest foresight analysis exercise, which looks ahead to 2031 and focuses on the role of science in society's response to emerging global challenges.
Final four Rio+20 policy briefs releasedMar 19, 2012The final four Rio+20 policy briefs have been released by the Global Environmental Change (GEC) Research Community covering the following topics: energy security, health, well-being and green economy.

ICSU ROA Project Proposal Writing Workshop: Sustainable Energy & Natural and Human-induced Hazards and DisastersMay 30, 2012ICSU Regional Office for Africa re-launched the implementation of its science plans on Sustainable Energy and on Natural and Human-induced Hazards and Disasters through a change of approach. The approach is to establish thematic international research consortia to develop project proposals from the science plans and submit to identified funders. To this effect, ICSU ROA organised a workshop on 22-23 March 2012 in Pretoria, South Africa, to concretise the formation of consortia and to plan the way forward with the planned project proposals.

ICSU Publications12th CFRS Meeting (Mar 2012)May 03, 2012The Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in the conduct of Science (CFRS) met on 5-7 March 2012. Prior to the meeting, Committee members discussed matters of common interest with representatives from the French Académie des sciences committees “Science, éthique et société” and “Défense des Hommes de Science” (CODHOS). At its own meeting, the situation of the scientific community in Turkey was raised in the context of freedom of science. CFRS also looked into the situation of academies in Montenegro.
