NewsCall for Applications: Food Futures Networking ConferenceDec 03, 2012The ISSC, ICSU and the DFG are organising a networking conference in April 2013 in Villa Vigoni at Lake Como in Italy. Young scientists working on integrated science on food systems are invited to submit their proposals. Applications close on December 14th.

Future Earth regional workshopsOct 23, 2012Future Earth seeks to provide knowledge at multiple scales - global, regional and local – and to address the connections among these scales. To seek inputs which can drive regional partnerships and engage a broad range of stakeholders, ICSU organized an initial series of three regional workshops. These were held in Cape Town (31 October-2 November 2012), Kuala Lumpur (21-23 November 2012) and Mexico City (3-4 December 2012). Options to organize meetings in the Middle East and Europe are still in planning.
Future Earth Transition Team proposes three research themesOct 18, 2012The Transition Team, responsible for the initial design of Future Earth, met in Paris on 20-21 September to agree on the broad outlines of recommendations for the research framework, governance, stakeholder engagement and communications strategy. In the wake of Rio+20, the Team also agreed on the importance of strategically positioning Future Earth in the science-policy landscape, as a key science provider for the definition of Sustainable Development Goals.

AfricaFuture Earth Regional Workshop for AfricaNov 06, 2012The International Council for Science, with financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) organised the Future Earth Regional Workshop for Africa, which was held in Cape Town, South Africa on 31 October – 02 November 2012. The workshop brought together about 50 global environmental change scientists from within and outside Africa. It provided a platform for these scientists and other stakeholders working on global environmental change research across disciplines to discuss and elaborate recommendations for the development of Future Earth on the continent.

ICSU PublicationsICSU Foresight Analysis Report 2 - A Success ScenarioNov 16, 2012Developing a more aspirational ‘success scenario’ than its predecessor, this report was produced at a workshop in 2011 and was then refined after a series of consultations with the ICSU community. ‘Road-tested’ against the four exploratory scenarios that had been developed in part 1, we were able to identify the key challenges or tensions that ICSU is likely to face between now and 2031.
