Synthesis report ICSU-UNESCO Regional Science and Technology workshops
The report summarizes the findings of the five Rio+20 regional science and technology workshops for Asia Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, the Arab States, and Europe, which were organised in 2011 by ICSU and UNESCO for Rio+20.
The objective of the Conference is to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges.
ICSU represents the international scientific community in this process, and is organising a range of activities for Rio+20 like:
- Participation in official global and regional intergovernmental preparatory meetings.
- Organisation of regional science and technology workshops
- Organisation of a Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development at Rio+20
- Mobilising ICSU National and Union Members
The Rio+20 conference should decide to launch a process to develop a new contract between science and society to deliver the knowledge necessary for a sustainable future.
