ICSU ROLAC and NCONACYT organized a five-day workshop on writing journal articles and giving oral presentations
The Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean of International Council for Science (ICSU ROLAC) and N-CONACYT organized a five-day workshop entitled: “Writing Journal Articles and Giving Presentations: Skills for Success” and it aimed to give researchers in El Salvador the knowledge and skills needed to communicate their research internationally.
The workshop was conducted by Barbara Gastel, a physician specializing in biomedical writing and editing, is professor of integrative biosciences, humanities in medicine, and biotechnology at Texas A&M University. The activity had great acceptance and included the participation of around 40 people including researchers, university professors, governmental institution representatives as well as public and private university representatives.
This 5-day workshop had mix of lecture, discussion and exercise structure. In that sense, participants were able to hear the up-to-date theory on writing scientific articles and also put that theory into practice by conducting individual, pair and group discussions and exercises. Participants were able to cover topics such as: Approaching a writing project; Authenticity and Accuracy; Ethics; The Structure of a Scientific Paper; Publishing a Scientific Paper; References; Writing Concisely; Preparing Oral Presentations, and much more.
In conclusion, this 5-day workshop provided Salvadorian researchers with topnotch knowledge and tools on how to write scientific papers and how to present their work orally at an international level. Having access to activities like this, enables local researchers, government institutions as well as private and public universities the possibility to publish their researches and findings in prestigious and well-known scientific journals, and that ultimately benefits ICSU ROLAC host country and the region as well.
