Workshop on disaster risk management in LAC
ICSU ROLAC, in collaboration with the Argentine National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) and the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) program, organized the “Regional Workshop on Disaster Risk Management in LAC: Towards a project plan for integrating science and risk management for the region” in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 3-5 September, 2012. The event was co-financed by an ICSU grant and CONICET and supported by the Argentine National Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences (ANCEFN) under the auspices of the Argentine Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation (MINCyT).
The conceptual approach of this workshop was based on the ICSU ROLAC Science Plan “Understanding and Managing Risk Associated with Natural Hazards: A Comprehensive Scientific Approach for LAC” as well as on the IRDR Science Plan.
It was expected that this workshop, based on regional case studies, proposed mechanisms for cooperation and complementation of regional capacities. Another objective was the formulation of a long term plan for capacity building at the scientific level. The workshop in particular aimed:
1. To strengthen and broaden cooperation on risk management and vulnerability reduction at the regional level between governments and academic and scientific institutions.
2. To promote integrated research on disaster risk by e.g. developing multidisciplinary teams among natural and social sciences working on prevention, mitigation and risk reduction, associated with natural hazards.
3. To adapt existing scientific information and data through tools ready to be used by policy-makers and risk managers.
4. To promote integrated research and applications among scientists, technical communication and information experts, risk managers and policy-makers through capacity development.
The workshop in particular addressed the three themes “social vulnerability in the context of disaster risk”, “trans-disciplinary tools for making scientific data useful to risk managers”, and “institutional arrangements for risk management”.
