Graduated from the University of Rajasthan and Master's in Pharmacuetical Chemistry from Banaras Hindu University, Professor Gupta concluded his doctoral studies at Washington State University, in 1971. His professional experience includes: Alexander von Humbolt Research Fellowship at University of Munich, Professor and researcher at the University of Panama, Founding Director of the Center for Pharmacognostic Research on Panamanian Flora, Executive Director of a cooperative loan program with the Interamerican Development Bank on research strengthening and Dean of the School of Pharmacy at the University of Panama. He is currently the Manager of Health Area of CYTED program.
He was International Coordinator of the Ibero-American Program of Science and Technology for Development's (CYTED) Natural Products Drug Discovery Program, Research Associate with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, and Executive Director of the
INTERCIENCIA Association.
Member of the Board of Directors of the International Foundation for Science and Vice President of the Plant Chemistry Group of the International Organization of Chemical Sciences for Development, he is also member of the Royal Academy of Pharmacy in Spain, the Latin American Academy of Sciences, the National Commission of Biodiversity in Panama, Rho Chi, Sigma XI, the American Society of Pharmacognosy, the German Research Society on Medicinal Plants, the Phytochemical Society of Europe and founding member and Secretary of the Panamanian Association for the Advancement of Science.
Professor Gupta is the recipient of the AAAS Award for International Scientific Cooperation. He is honored for his continuous efforts in the promotion of international scientific cooperation in the Ibero-American countries and for the study and utilization of biodiversity as a source of novel pharmaceuticals for the benefit of all people. He was chosen as a TWAS Fellow in 2011.
