Biographies of members

Arturo Martinez from Argentina is Head of Global Programs at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Research of Argentina (CONICET), Vice President of the Argentine Association for the Advance of Science (AAPC in Spanish), and member of the  Argentine Council for Foreign Relations (CARI in Spanish) in the section dealing with the environment. He is Agriculture Engineer from Buenos Aires University with a PhD degree in Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Reading University at the Agriculture Botany Department, U.K. He worked as Senior Consultant to the Minister of Foreign Relations of Argentina on technical and scientific issues related to biodiversity and on safe use of biotechnology. Chief of the Seed and Plant Genetic Resources Services at FAO, Rome, Italy (2001-2008), he has made important contributions including the management of crop and crop biodiversity and the program on managing of pollinators. As Senior Technical Officer in the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Dr. Martinez acted as ICSU liaison on specific technical issues in the area of conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources, including marine genetic resources.
