ICSU LAC Participation at the Brazilian Lauching of the international Polar Year
The International Polar Year (IPY) is an international effort researching the polar regions.
From 2007-2008, The International Polar Year was co-sponsored by ICSU and WMO and became the largest coordinated research program in the Earth’s polar regions, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the International Geophysical Year 1957–1958. An estimated 50,000 researchers, local observers, educators, students, and support personnel from more than 60 nations were involved in the 228 international IPY projects.
Y 2007–2008 involved a large range of disciplines, from geophysics to ecology, human health, social sciences, and the humanities. All IPY projects included partners from several nations and/or from indigenous communities and polar residents’ organizations.
ICSU ROLAC participated at the IPY lauching in Brazil.
