Workshop on Mathematics Education in LAC

The ICSU ROLAC science plan on mathematics education in LAC concluded that in this region children are not being taught at the level they will need to live their lives and work productively, and that children’s mathematical knowledge is poor in relation to the international average.
José Antonio de la Peña (Mexico), Chair of ICSU RCLAC and member of the Scientific Committee of the workshop, and Patricio Felmer (Chile), member of ICSU RCLAC and member of the Organizing Committee of the workshop gave lectures during the event. The objectives of the workshop were the exchange of experiences of mathematicians involved in mathematics education, as well as the creation of networks, the identification of good practices and the analysis of the impact of already implemented initiatives in this field.
The organizing committee of the workshop is planning two follow-up activities. The next workshop is projected to take place in Mexico in 2013, the third one in Arizona, USA in 2014.
