Visit to the Central University of Ecuador

On 17 May 2011, Kerstin Schmidt-Verkerk visited Dr. Clímaco Egas Arroyo, Vice Rector of the Central University of Ecuador.

One of ICSU ROLAC´s strategic priorities is the integration of institutions in LAC countries that are not yet national members.

Until now, Ecuador has not been a member of ICSU, nor have many scientists from Ecuador been involved in ICSU ROLAC activities to date. As Ecuador does not have a National Academy of Sciences, the regional office had approached the authorities of the Central University of Ecuador, a very prestigious institution in the country, and proposed a meeting with an ICSU ROLAC representative.

On 17 May 2011, Kerstin Schmidt-Verkerk had the honor of being received by the Vice Rector, Dr. Clímaco Egas Arroyo, in his office.

The purpose of the meeting was to establish contact between the Central University of Ecuador and ICSU ROLAC. During the meeting, the structure of ICSU and the role that ICSU plays in international science collaboration, the promotion of the universality of science and science for policy were presented. Furthermore, the purpose of ICSU ROLAC was explained, and its four scientific priority areas: biodiversity, natural hazards, sustainable energy and mathematics education, were introduced.

It was agreed that future collaboration between the Central University of Ecuador and ICSU ROLAC would be highly beneficial for both parties. The Vice Rector expressed his full agreement to considering the possibility that Ecuador might become a future National Member of ICSU. Furthermore, he suggested that ways of collaboration with respect to ICSU ROLAC's scientific priority areas should be sought. To this end, ICSU ROLAC will remain in contact with the Central University of Ecuador to provide further information and build on the very positive first meeting.
