Proposed Projects on Human-induced Hazards and Disasters
Sub-Saharan Africa is prone to many types of Hazards and Disasters. The commonest and most devastating event are hydro-meteorological, such as drought, floods, heat waves, wildfires, tropical cyclones and hurricanes, hailstorms and dust storms. The geo-hazards include earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, and mass movements (landslides, mud flows, erosion and saltation). Although these events may occur naturally, some of them are triggered or exacerbated by human activities.
ICSU ROA has developed the following projects from its science plan to mitigate the impacts of these hazards and disasters:
Project HD01: Geo-hazards
Project HD02: Hydo-meteorological hazards and disasters: vulnerability and resilience
