The purpose of this regional workshop was to prepare for the Rio+20 International Conference on Sustainable Development, that will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2 - 4 June 2012. The consultative workshop aimed to provide a platform for African natural scientists, social scientists and engineers to prepare joint positions and concerted input into the intergovernmental Rio+20 Regional Preparatory of Meeting for Africa, which will be organised 10-14 October 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
The Rio+20 Regional Consultative Workshop was held from the 30th of May to the 1st of June 2011 at Saint George Hotel in Pretoria, South Africa. The outcome of the consultative workshop has been compiled from the point of view of the scientific and technological community, as part of the process being coordinated jointly by ICSU and UNESCO at the global level. Other partners at the global level are the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) and the International Social Sciences Council (ISSC), who brought representatives to the workshop.
