18th ICSU RCA Meeting
Mar 29, 2017 The ICSU Regional Committee for Africa (RCA) held its 18th Meeting in Lusaka, Zambia, on 13 -14 March 2017. The meeting was attended by most of the Committee members.
Science Seminar Apr 04, 2017
The ICSU Regional Office for Africa (ROA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education of the Republic of Zambia and the Mulungushi University, organised a 1-day Science Seminar in Lusaka Zambia, on 15 March 2017. The Seminar was officially opened by the Honourable Minister of Higher Education, Prof Nkandu Luo.
ICSU ROA Director Appointed Mar 29, 2017
Dr Daniel Nyanganyura has been appointed as the Regional Director of International Council for Science (ICSU) Regional Office for Africa (ROA) with effect from 23 February 2017. Dr Nyanganyura has been with ICSU ROA since August 2008 as a Programme Specialist in Physics, Mathematics and Engineering Sciences. Since July 2016 he has acted in the capacity of Regional Director of the Office. He holds a Doctorate in Atmospheric Physics, MSc in Agricultural Meteorology, and BSc 4th Year Honour in Physics (all from the University of Zimbabwe); as well as a Licentiate Degree in Education in the Specialty of Physics and Astronomy from Enrique Jose Varona Higher Pedagogical Institute, Havana, Cuba.
Science Plans Scoping Workshop Mar 01, 2017
In conjunction with the Scientific Research Association of Mozambique (AICIMO), ICSU Regional Office for Africa (ROA) organised a 2-day Science Plans Scoping Workshop in Maputo, Mozambique on 08 – 09 February, 2017. The workshop was officially opened by the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology, Higher and Technical Vocational Education of the Republic of Mozambique, Prof Jorge Nhambiu.
3rd African Science Plans Steering Committee Meeting Feb 22, 2017
The African Science Plans Steering Committee (ASPSC) held its 3rd Meeting in Maputo, Mozambique, on 7 February 2017. At this meeting that was attended by most of the Committee members, they deliberated on the issues around and gave inputs towards the finalisation of the revision process of the ICSU ROA African Science Plans as well as the roll out of project from these documents. The Committee explored avenues to identify potential expertise and knowledge systems to advance the implementation of the Science Plans while tapping into the expertise of consortia members as well as other scientists within and outside the region. The Committee proposed ways to develop and roll out detailed and concise project proposals targeting specific identified funding agencies.

Representatives of fourteen African National Members and eleven International Scientific Unions of ICSU participated in a 2-day Mid-ICSU General Assembly African Meeting in Benoni near Johannesburg, South Africa from 2-3 June, 2016.
17th Regional Committee for Africa Meeting Jun 14, 2016
The ICSU Regional Committee for Africa (RCA) held its 17th Meeting in Pretoria, South Africa, on 7 – 8 September 2016. The Meeting was attended by a number of Committee members and representative of the ICSU Head Office. During the Meeting, the Committee was updated on the activities of ICSU at regional and global levels with special focus on the issues linking ICSU Regional Office for Africa (ROA) activities to ICSU global programmes/initiatives. The Committee deliberated on a number of matters, giving more attention to providing advice/direction to the planned activities of ICSU ROA.
Africa Future Earth Committee (AFEC) holds second meeting in Pretoria, South Africa Jan 20, 2016
The Africa Future Earth Committee (AFEC) held its 2nd meeting in Pretoria, South Africa from 6 to 7 December, 2016. Nine out of the eleven members (Cesar Kapseu, Yacoub Idriss Halawlaw, Chrispine Kowenje, Bunny Lejju Julius, Ahmed Abdel Hady (co-Vice Chair), Izeddine Zorkani, Coleen Vogel (co-Vice Chair, Rungano Karimanzira and Mark New) attended the meeting. Belinda Reyers (Vice-Chair of the Future Earth Science Committee), Jon Padgham (Global Change System for Analysis, Research and Training (START) and FE Global) and Nondumiso Jwatya (Deputy Director: Multilateral Cooperation, DST, South Africa) were in attendance while Daniel Nyanganyura and Richard Glover of ICSU ROA acted as Secretariat.
The First African Future Earth Committee meeting Sep 07, 2015
African Future Earth Committee (AFEC) held its first physical meeting on 13 – 14 August 2015, in Pretoria, South Africa. This meeting was attended by all the eleven members of AFEC plus Hassan Virji from START (representing Future Earth Global Secretariat) and Berhanu Abegaz from the African Academy of Science (as meeting chair). The event was co-sponsored by the government of South Africa (through the National Research Foundation) and ICSU.
ICSU ROA to work with NASAC Feb 16, 2015
It is an exciting development that ICSU ROA has established a working relationship with the Network of African Academies (NASAC) in recent months, following a long and considered engagement. The two are planning to work together to initiate research projects to implement science plans of the Regional Office, which are in the areas of Global Environmental Change (including Climate and Adaptation), Health and Human Well-being, Hazards and Disasters, as well as Sustainable Energy. These projects, we hope, will get funding from a large proposal currently in process with a reputable research funder, with the involvement of the ICSU head office.
Launch of ICSU's International Programme Office on Urban Health and Well-being Jan 20, 2015
The International Programme Office (IPO) for Health and Wellbeing in the Changing Urban Environment Programme, the latest addition to the ICSU family, was launched in Xiamen, China, on 8 December 2014. The Office is hosted by the Institute for Urban Environment (IUE) of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS). The Urban Health & Wellbeing programme aims to better understand what makes a "healthy urban environment", and is co-sponsored by the United Nations University (UNU) and the InterAcademy Medical Panel (IAMP).
SciDataCon2014 Conference Jan 15, 2015
The International Conference on Data Sharing and Integration, held every two years, is an important showcase of open science around the world. The 2014 conference was held at the Convention Centre of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India. The conference, with an overarching theme Data Sharing and Integration for Global Sustainability, was organised in partnership between ICSU’s Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA), ICSU World Data System (WDS) and the Indian National Science Academy (INSA)

African scientists appointed into Executive Board of ICSU Sep 09, 2014
Two of the three scientists from Africa nominated to the Executive Board of ICSU for 2015. - 2017 were voted in during the 31st General Assembly in Auckland, NewZealand. The GA, which takes place every three years, was held from 31st August to 3rd September 2014. This shows the confidence that the global scientific community has in developing countries as key role players in ensuring that global science is strengthened to benefit society.
Future Earth Regional Workshop for Africa II Jun 11, 2014
ICSU Regional Office for Africa, in collaboration with the University of Pretoria, successfully organised a 2nd Future Earth Regional Workshop for Africa, which was held at the University of Pretoria, in Pretoria, South Africa, from 23 to 24 June, 2014. The Workshop was attended by about 70 participants (from across Africa) who represented national governments, intergovernmental bodies, regional economic communities, UN agencies, academic and research institutions, science academies, ICSU national members and scientific unions.
