Future Earth - research for global sustainability

Future Earth: a new 10-year initiative which aims to deliver knowledge to enable societies to meet their sustainable development goals in the coming decades.

ICSU, the International Social Science Council (ISSC), the Belmont Forum, a high level group of major funders of global environmental change research, together with UNEP, UNU and UNESCO, and with WMO as observer, are jointly establishing this new 10-year initiative.

  • Successful Working Group meetings
    20 February 2012

    Working groups 1 and 2 of the Transition Team met over last week at ICSU to prepare for the 3rd Transition Team meeting, taking place in London at the end of March. Working Group 1 is defining the research strategy for Future Earth, while Working Group 2 is designing its institutional design.

  • Future Earth at Planet Under Pressure Conference
    30 January 2012
    The Planet Under Pressure Conference on 26-29 March 2012, a major international conference focusing on solutions to the global sustainability challenge, will provide a unique opportunity for Future Earth to share its vision with a wider audience and stakeholders. Future Earth will be presented there at a key event on March 27.

  • Outcomes of the 2nd Transition Team meeting
    17 January 2012
    The second meeting of the Transition Team, the committee designing ‘Future Earth - research for global sustainability’, was held on 9-11 December 2011 in San Francisco. As outlined in the meeting summary, further progress was achieved to define a conceptual framework, a research strategy and a governance  for  Future Earth.

  • "Future Earth" is born
    14 December 2011
    The second Transition Team meeting just concluded in San Francisco agreed that the Initiative will be called "Future Earth - research for global sustainability". The meeting worked towards the formulation of a conceptual framework, a research strategy and an institutional design for Future Earth.
  • ICSU General Assembly approves establishment of new Initiative
    28 September 2011
    The ICSU General Assembly approved the establishment, in cooperation with the other partners of the Alliance, of a new 10-year initiative on Earth System Sustainability. Read the press release.
