Following its engagement and co-sponsoring of an international workshop on access to genetic resources and sharing benefits arising from their utilization (ABS System), ICSU CFRS adopted an Advisory Note on the subject at its latest meeting in September 2011.
Benefiting from the presentations and discussions at the International Workshop "Access to Genetic Resources and Sharing Benefits Arising from Their Utilization (ABS)", organised by the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT), in Berne in May 2011, the ICSU CFRS Advisory Note attempts to strike the balance between the important question of responsibility and the global issue of equity in this area. At the same time, and because scientists must be in a position to work without unnecessary impediments, the note is also concerned about access procedures, which might create research constraints.
