Synopsis

The communication of scientific results entails both rights and responsibilities to scientists. They have the right to receive accurate information from their peers. Therefore, they are expected to communicate their own results under the same quality standards. Besides, scientists bear today with the responsibility to share their results with the community, and to actively participate in a discussion on the use of scientific knowledge. This entanglement of rights and responsibilities leads to vast and multiple perspectives and proposals within scientific communication, generating daily debates of great relevance on the exercise of day to day scientific efforts, as well as on defining communication policies among academicians, scientists, media and government. The various aspects were discussed in the four sessions "Responsibilities of scientists in communicating among peers", "Communication by scientists to society", "Communication of scientists with society: problems and complexities" and "New systems to communicate knowledge". In each session,  three lectures were given, followed by a panel in which the participants could discuss and answer questions from the audience.

Outcome

The conference was attended by some 500 participants, mostly journalists, scientists and students. It drew a great deal of media interest. ICSU CFRS produced an Advisory Note on the relationship between science and the media, touching on the arising issues related to freedom and responsibility. It is planned that the conference proceedings will be published.

The meeting was organised by the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, with the support of Academia Colombiana de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales (ACCEFYN), the Departamento Administrativo de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación of Columbia (Colciencias), Revista semana, universia, ICSU CFRS and SciDev.net.
