Synopsis
The discussions revealed the need to find a balance between the important question of responsibility and the global issue of equity. At the same time, and because scientists must be in a position to work without unnecessary impediments, the discussions included concerns about access to genetic and other biological material because access procedures might create research constraints.

The workshop was organised and hosted by the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT), whose Biodiversity Forum has been concerned with the issue of Access and Benefit Sharing for several years, in consultation with the ICSU Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in the conduct of Science (CFRS). The overseas speakers joined the workshop through teleconference and/or Skype.
