Summary
The Singapore Statement on Research Integrity, a consensus statement laying out the globally-applicable principles and responsibilities related to research integrity and scientific conduct has been agreed by the 230 participants at the 2nd World Conference on Research Integrity (WCRI). The statement is a major outcome of the conference, which took place against a background of several high profile cases of research misconduct. The Singapore Statement has attracted international media attention and is well on the way to becoming an important reference point for science.
ICSU was one of many organisations supporting the event, which built on the discussions from the first conference, held in Lisbon in 2007. Members of the ICSU Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in the conduct of Science (CFRS) gave presentations on each of the main conference themes: science publications; codes of conduct; and individual and institutional responsibilities. There was also a special session on the ‘climategate controversy’ (from late 2009), involving journalists and representatives of the Global Environmental Change Programmes.
