Following recommendations of the Council for Higher Education and Scientific Research in 1972 and 1982 respectively, the Cameroon Academy of Sciences was finally created in 1990 by a number of Cameroonian scholars meeting in Douala, Cameroon, during a Conference on Agriculture and Agricultural Research in Sub-Saharan Africa. The goal of the Academy is to promote the progress of science and technology for the economic, social, and cultural development of Cameroon. Specific objectives include: to promoting research and technological training at the highest level; contributing to the defense of science and the franchise of scientists; advising national and international policy-makers on issues related to science and technology in the service of man; developing scientific and technological relations with the productive sectors of the national economy; and to promoting scientific and technological cooperation on a non-governmental basis. As a non-governmental organization, it is affiliated to both the Ministry of Scientific and Technical Research and the Ministry of Higher Education. The Academy is composed of three colleges, namely, the College of Biological Sciences, the College of Social Sciences, and the College of Mathematics and Physical Sciences. Present membership stands at 45.
