The Research Council of Zimbabwe (RCZ) is a governmental body which promotes the enhancement of scientific and technological capability through cooperative activities among the scientific and industrial community in Zimbabwe. The RCZ establishes and maintains links with professional bodies and centres of excellence to enhance its role as a facilitator of national and international collaboration in science and technology. At the same time, it endeavours to assist scientists to improve their absorptive capacity of scientific findings and to apply them for the benefit of society. The RCZ is keenly involved in applied sciences and technology transfer and is increasing its emphasis on the use of science and technology for development. Research is primarily aimed at solving development problems. This is complemented by workshops and symposia where professionals meet to exchange experience and learn of the latest developments in their fields. The RCZ's operational arms are its Standing Committees in the following areas: agricultural sciences, natural and environmental sciences, industrial development, mineral resources and earth sciences, health sciences, remote sensing, social sciences and informatics. Membership of the Council is for a period of three years and all members are appointed by the President of Zimbabwe. The Council has, at any one time, ten to fifteen members. The day-to-day planning and operation of the RCZ's affairs is conducted by a small secretariat.
