The second ICSU ROA book tittled "Chemistry for Sustainable Development in Africa" has been published end of July 2012. The book provides an analytical platform to bring the application of chemistry closer to the society and to showcase some of the work done by scientists on the African continent.

An African Regional Implementation Workshop on Hazards and Disasters workshop was held at Dakar, Senegal from 26-27 September, 2012. The workshop was attended by leading hazards and disasters experts from the African and other regions of the globe. Representatives from regional hazards and disasters initiatives/organisations and some funding agencies were also in attendance.

Post-ICSU GA30 African National Members and Scientific Unions Forum

An African post-ICSU GA30 Forum was held in Pretoria, South Africa from 22 to 23 November, 2012, attended by several representatives of National Members (NMs) and Scientific Unions (SUs).The Forum gave ICSU NMs and SUs in Africa an opportunity to get an update on the activities of the ICSU Regional Office for Africa. It also explored ways to foster collaborative activities between the Office and the ICSU Family on the continent.

The International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG/AIG) offers a number of grants for YOUNG GEOMORPHOLOGISTS (under 35 yrs old) who are willing to take part in the 8th International Conference on Geomorphology (Paris, France, 27-31 August 2012). Future Earth Regional Workshop for Africa

The International Council for Science, with financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) organised the Future Earth Regional Workshop for Africa, which was held in Cape Town, South Africa on 31 October – 02 November 2012. The workshop brought together about 50 global environmental change scientists from within and outside Africa. It provided a platform for these scientists and other stakeholders working on global environmental change research across disciplines to discuss and elaborate recommendations for the development of Future Earth on the continent.

The ICSU Regional Committee for Africa (RCA) successfully held its 13th Meeting. The meeting, which took place in Pretoria, South Africa, on 23-24 August 2012 was attended by most of the Committee members, and Steven Wilson, the Executive Director of ICSU, joined the meeting via Skype.

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) H.E. Dr. Jean Ping appointed a High Level Panel to review the AU’s Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action (CPA). The AU Commission provides overall political and policy leadership for the implementation of the CPA, implementation of which is provided by the NEPAD Office of Science and Technology.

Awelani who is on an internship programme of the Department of Science and Technology of the Republic of South Africa has been deployed to undertake his one year internship programme at ICSU ROA. His background is in International Relations.

The 13th ICSU Regional Committee for Africa Meeting will be held in Pretoria, South Africa, 22 – 24 August 2012. The entire membership of the Committee is expected to attend this meeting at which far-reaching decisions are anticipated to be made to give strategic direction to the activities of the ICSU Regional Office for Africa. Square Kilometre Array Bid Outcome

On 25 May 2012, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, the Members of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Organisation, agreed on a dual site solution (South Africa & Australia) for the SKA telescope. The agreement was based on advise of the SKA Site Advisory Committees of both sites.

Founding Regional Director of ICSU Regional Office for Africa Appointed Minister

His excellency President, Jakaya Kikwete of the Republic of Tanzania recently appointed the founding and former Director of ICSU Regional Office for Africa Prof Sospeter Muhongo, as the Countrty's Minister of Energy and Minirals. At the time of his appointment, Prof Muhongo was a full Professor in Geology at the University of Dar es Salaam, Editor-in Chief of the Journal of Africa Earth Sciences, which specialises in the search for natural resources in Africa and the Middle East, Vice President of the Commission for Geological Map of the World, Honorary Fellow of the Geological Society of London and Honorary Research Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences.

ICSU ROA Project Proposal Writing Workshop: Sustainable Energy & Natural and Human-induced Hazards and Disasters

ICSU Regional Office for Africa re-launched the implementation of its science plans on Sustainable Energy and on Natural and Human-induced Hazards and Disasters through a change of approach. The approach is to establish thematic international research consortia to develop project proposals from the science plans and submit to identified funders. To this effect, ICSU ROA organised a workshop on 22-23 March 2012 in Pretoria, South Africa, to concretise the formation of consortia and to plan the way forward with the planned project proposals.
