Carthage Smith (born 1963, UK citizen) took up a new post of Deputy Executive Director of ICSU in 2001. His main responsibility is to support the Executive Director in overall policy and strategy development and implementation. Prior to moving to ICSU, he was head of the International Section at the Medical Research Council in the UK. Originally trained as a biochemist, his PhD and research background are in Neuroscience.
