International science requires large scale collaboration of scientists across national borders in research and in research infrastructure. ICSU is exploring the potential development of such science over the next 20 years in order to test the role and mission of ICSU and guide long-term strategic choices aimed at building ICSU’s value in strengthening international science for the benefit of society. Step 1 in this process seeks a broad set of inputs on what may drive the development of international science over the next 20 years. ICSU thus seeks your personal opinion on the “key drivers” of this evolution. In a world of cause and effect, key drivers (synonymous with change drivers or driving forces) are causes. We provide a few examples of possible drivers for illustrative purposes only. A distilled list of 15-20 such drivers will be used to frame scenarios of how international collaboration in science might help progress in science and benefit society two decades from now. To give you a sense of what scenarios look like (from other contexts), see some examples. For more on ICSU’s foresight process, see a two-page summary. Any questions or comments can be directed to foresight Instructions:
