Priority Area Assessment (PAA) on Data and Information

The 27th General Assembly of ICSU, held in September 2002, endorsed the recommendation of the Committee on Scientific Planning and Review (CSPR) to carry out a Priority Area Assessment (PAA) on Scientific Data and Information as part of ICSU’s overall strategy development process. An independent ad hoc expert panel was established to carry out this assessment, which was completed in 2004.

The immediate outcome of the PAA was a published report. It outlines a long-term vision for the future and includes many recommendations of relevance to both the immediate ICSU family and partners and also other institutions and individuals with an interest in scientific data and information issues.

In order to implement the key recommendations from the PAA relating to the reforms of ICSUs own structures, a new ad hoc committee was established in 2007. This Strategic Committee on Information and Data will report to the General Assembly in October 2008.
